BFS News for November 13, 2017

posted Nov 13, 2017, 5:29 AM by Forgotten Sea

  • Curia: Notes from last week's Curia are available here.
  • Largess: Ælin is collecting largess to present to Their Majesties at Kris Kinder. If you have any items you would like to donate, please contact her. artsandsciences@bfs-kc.org
  • Classes: We are looking to schedule classes after Curia and/or on the 4th Wednesday of the month, during fighter practice. In order to better serve the populace, we are taking a survey of what classes people would be interested in attending. If you would consider attending a class, please fill out the survey here. If you have a suggestion for a class you would be willing to teach, please contact Ælin, artsandsciences@bfs-kc.org.
  • Kris Kinder Crash Space:
"Hi everyone!  I'm Konstantia, and I am serving as the crash space coordinator for Kris Kinder.  If you are able to open your home to guests, please fill out the google form located here: https://goo.gl/forms/DKuydPKi2PDPOsa42
If you know someone who is needing crash space, please fill out the form here: https://goo.gl/forms/wPAVJ1AQOKCcc71q2
We in the Barony of Forgotten Sea are glad that you are joining us, and hope you enjoy the best shopping that Calontir has to offer."
  • Basic Armored Combat Training:
"Starting next Wednesday, 2 Knights and a Huscarl, all broken, would like to start basic armored combat training for any who would like to develop a good foundation for fighting.  It'll be mostly out of armor type training; how to hold a sword; how to move; basically how to throw a shot (cup and saucer type stuff); and a big emphasis on slow work (not warm-ups, think more like Tai Chi).  Eventually, how to do pell work and for those who need it, a path to armored sparring.
This is not a one time thing, or a few weeks.  Ariel, Logan, and I are going to commit to having someone there for as long as we have interested students.  I'll probably even keep coming and working on my own slow work after interest has waned (and in case we get new fighters and such).  I'd also like this to be a class like setting, not a few minutes before we go get into armor.
Any questions, please let me know." --Master Brendan
Note: As this is non-contact, fighters of all ages are welcome.
  • Garb Swap:
    "Greetings to the Barony!
Some of you may have heard that the Barony currently has a surfeit of gold key garb.  This is absolutely true.  I volunteered to sort it out for our Chatelaine Josefina, since she has a very small apartment and can't store it all.  I was told there were five totes.  I brought home seven totes and five trash bags full of clothes.  :)  Many of these are nice outfits or pieces, but unsuitable for gold key due to being fitted or complicated.  What to do with it?
I proposed to our officers to hold a garb swap night.  I will bring the excess gold key, and newcomers or established members may acquire items from it for whatever donation to the Barony's coffers you feel appropriate.  This is also for others to bring garb you no longer wear, but might work well for someone of a different size or period.  Put a reasonable price on your items and send them home with someone else!  Spruce up your wardrobe with new-to-you attire!
The garb swap will be held in the second room we rent at the Irene French Center on the FIFTH Wednesday of November (note not fourth Wednesday, that would be the day before Thanksgiving and we changed our reservation so folks could be more likely to come), 11/29 6-9PM - just in time for Kris Kinder.  The multipurpose room is on the first floor, to the left of the main desk if you go in the front doors.
Please contact me if you have any questions.  Thanks," --Branwen
  • Kris Kinder: December is fast approaching, and the Kris Kinder event stewards are looking for people to volunteer. There are several roles we will need help in:
    • 8pm, night before: moving tables/chairs and helping clean/prep the event site
    • 6:30am, day-of: helping Merchants unload. Any dollys, carts, hand-trucks-etc would be appreciated. Contact Niall, kk_gate@bfs-kc.org.
    • Day-of: we will need people to work gate shifts. We will begin taking signups for specific shifts after the day's schedule of events starts to develop.
    • Approx 5pm (during Court): helping Merchants pack up and take down tables
    • Immediately after Court: Tor will be handling cleanup afterwards; if anyone else wants to stick around, more help would be welcomed!

Kris Kinder is our big money-making event for the Barony, and helps pay for our practice site. If you attend the weekly fighter practices, whether you fight or not, please consider helping out with it! Please contact kk_eventsteward@bfs-kc.org if you would like to volunteer.
  • Content sought for upcoming Clarion:
The December issue of the Baronial newsletter is dedicated to Arts and Sciences.
Here are some ways you can really help:
         1. Advice - 1-5 Sentences on getting started in SCA Arts and Sciences.  What was your first A&S project?  Any A&S Competition advice?
         2.  Local resources - Where do you go for fabric, yarn, equipment, information, etc.?
         3. Kingdom / online resources - What websites  do you recommend for your projects?  Who teaches?
These kinds of Clarion submissions would not need a Creative Works Release Form.
The Clarion is always looking  for articles; a longer piece on a project or research you have done, a recipe, games, handicraft, artwork, notes from a class - anything really. This kind of Clarion submission would need a Creative Works Release form.
    A photograph needs a Photographer's Release form.
Any recognizable face in a photo needs a Model Release form.
All forms are available at http://chronicler.calontir.org/  under  FORMS AND DOCUMENTATION.
I will help to make the paperwork as easy as possible.
The deadline for submissions is December 10, 2017
Email comments, questions and responses to:
  • Baronial Maps Fundraiser: Hugo is making a limited run of 25 prints each of his Forgotten Sea and Vatavia maps. The prints are $25 each, with profits going to the respective baronies. Shipping for one or both will be $7 if you want them mailed to you (no charge for delivery at an event or local BFS practice).
The maps will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. Email the following information to Hugo at HvHarlo@WIllPhillips.org to place your order:
    1. Your SCA Name
    2. Do you want a BFS map, a Vatavia Map, or both?
    3. Do you want the map(s) mailed to you? If so, what is your mailing address?
    4. Do you want to pick the map(s) up at an event? Which one? If you want a map to be delivered beyond Toys for Tots, please be prepared to pay for your order up front.
Payment will be taken via PayPal or cash.
  • Award Recommendations: Their Majesties will be visiting our Barony once more for Kris Kinder. If there is someone you have seen doing something worthy of recognition, submit an award recommendation! Don't assume that someone already has an award; check the OP. You need not be a member of an order to recommend somebody for it.
