Still Need a New Indoor Practice Site

We still need to find a new practice site should we be able to return to in-person fighting activity before spring or summer is fully upon us. Ideas and suggestions are welcome and needed! Contact Laird Brian at seneschal@bfs-kc.org.

Heraldic Consulting Next Week

Virtual heraldic consulting will take place next Wednesday, September 23rd, from 7-9 pm on Google Meet. To get feedback on or help with a new name or device, join Dorcas at meet.google.com/ypx-ozjg-dez.

New Wednesday Night Classes and Activities

September 30, 7 pm: Lady Rosie Dubroc of the Middle: How to Open Up a Can of Worms Without Making Too Much of a Mess: Starting an SCA Research Project.

Does research and documentation seem overwhelming? Are you interested in doing an A&S project but don't know where to start? This class will teach you how to find, evaluate, and document the sources you need to research and complete an A&S project in any category.

We’re still looking for classes. One of the advantages of the virtual format is that we can hold classes taught by teachers all across the Known World. To volunteer to teach, contact HL Ysabel at artsandsciences@bfs-kc.org.

Number of Archers Practicing on Sundays Continues to Grow

Sunday’s archery practice at Shawnee Mission Park was pleasant. The weather has been better, and the line is under shade, so it’s no surprise more people have picked up their bows.

You can get your archery permits at the Shawnee Mission Park office (the building you see as you enter the park from the Renner Road entrance). The cost is $5 for a one-day permit or $15 for an annual permit for Johnson County residents or $7/$20 for non-residents. Contact Mathurin for more information at archer-marshal@bfs-kc.org.

Archery practice for longbows and recurves (sorry, no crossbows allowed at the park) will be from 1 pm to 3 pm Sunday at the Shawnee Mission Park archery range as long as weather permits. Remember to bring your own water and wear a face mask.

Officers Needed

Your Barony needs you. We are short three positions:

·       Deputy for the Seneschal

·       Deputy for the Knight’s Marshal

·       Drop-dead deputy for the Knight’s Marshal

If these positions are not filled soon, our Barony will not be in compliance with Kingdom rules. If you are interested or would like more information about any of these positions please contact Brian at seneschal@bfs-kc.org or the Baron and Baroness at baronage@bfs-kc.org.

Baronial Meetings and Events:

·       Wednesday, 7 pm – BFS Virtual Meeting/Get-Together. Information on how to join with Zoom is listed above. Contact HE Alianora at baroness@bfs-kc.org for more information.

·       Sunday, 1 pm to 3 pm, Archery Practice at Shawnee Mission Park. Contact Mathurin at archer-marshal@bfs-kc.org or on Facebook (Rex Deaver) if you plan to attend.

From the Seneschal

Curia will be held online this Wednesday on Google Meet (see above) but at a new, hopefully more friendly, time of 7 pm. I encourage all to sign on and participate.

Spring Crown Tourney

After much effort and many snags, our bid for Spring Crown Tournament was passed over for the bid from Three Rivers. We wish them the best of fortune that this event actually occurs and that new Heirs to the Thrones of Calontir can be selected! I know that this is an important task that Their Majesties feel a heavy burden to complete.

Special thanks and recognition to Andromir for all his time, effort, perseverance and patience putting up with me in planning and battling to create and submit the Spring Crown Bid!

Bloody Trident Inn

We will move forward with planning for the rebirth of the Bloody Trident Inn event this spring! This is something that Their Excellencies and I along with the entire populace are most impatient to resurrect!

Officers Needed

Letters of Intent for the Deputy Knight’s Marshal for Rapier position will be accepted until Wednesday at the beginning of Curia. We are still in need of a new Knight’s Marshal, and a Drop-Dead Deputy Knight’s Marshal. The preference is to have them in place in October. Still also in need of a Deputy Seneschal.

New Practice Site

We still need to find a new practice site should we be able to return to in-person fighting activity before spring or summer is fully upon us. Ideas and suggestions are welcome and needed!

New A&S Minister!

You can still get your archery permits at the Shawnee Mission Park office (the building you see as you enter the park from the Renner Road entrance). Contact Mathurin for more information at archer-marshal@bfs-kc.org.

From the Baroness

Greetings Barony,

We hope this week is finding everyone in good spirits and finding positive ways to create as we are coming up to the end of August. We are looking forward to the crisp air and beautiful colors of Autumn and hoping that beauty gifted us by Mother Nature encourages all to create equally beautiful creations. We encourage you to show us what you are working on, either on the Baronial Facebook group page or, if you are not on Facebook and would like to share a photo, we would be glad to post it for you.

In Service,

~Baroness Alianora

Sing with the Barony This Wednesday at 7 pm

Mistress Dorcas will lead us in singing some Calontir classics. We won’t get through all of them, but we’ll make a good start. “Song of the Shield Wall” was left off the list of 14 Calontir classics, but we’ll sing that one too. As someone pointed out, with the mute button on, “no one can hear you sing, so you can belt out the favorites in any key that you like.”

Time: 7 pm

For more information on the Zoom meeting, contact Her Excellency Alianora at baroness@bfs-kc.org. To volunteer to teach a class, contact Her Excellency Ylva at artsandsciences@bfs-kc.org.

Join us Sunday at Shawnee Mission Park’s archery range. You’ll need to bring your own water, wear a mask and have a valid permit.

From the Baron

Greetings one and all!

During our time apart, we are reminded that we all have time to not only upgrade our personal kit but sometimes it helps to have a deadline. Nothing motivates like a deadline. We remind you that the Queen’s Prize Tournament is six months away. If you have not entered, please consider it. The learning experience is invaluable, please reach out to us and we will gladly help you with details.

If you haven’t had enough of Friday Night Bardic, join us next Wednesday for some bardic education. Mistress Dorcas will teach us Calontir’s popular songs, learn the lyrics and discuss the history thereof. We still believe in the dream, and we are grateful you are interested in continued participation.

~YIS, Gerald Kendall

From the Seneschal

Unto the Iren and Stile Fighters & Marshals of Forgotten Sea, I bear tidings of need.

Our beleaguered Knights Marshal, Master Brendan Mac an tSoir, is in need of respite.

To this end Their Excellencies and I are seeking candidates to act as an immediate, temporary stand-in when in-person activities resume, and to mentor and groom new marshal candidates through the process at best possible speed to step up to fill this position.

To that purpose I have identified a list of warranted marshals in the Barony, many of whom already hold another office. Those who are no longer active I have tried to remove. They are:

Anna Planyn

Avraham ben David Hakurari

Brian Robert MacDougall

Caius Rectus Xerxis

Duncan Bruce of Logan

Duncan of Skeene

Gwayne ap Tristam

Gerald Kendall

Gustov Jamison

Jon Bowyer

Martus Alexanderov

Matsunaga Kagetora

Murdoch Stubbhard

Niall Mac Brion

Snorri Bjornsson

Should any of these individuals feel that they might have the time and energy to mentor and mold marshals-in-training to assume this essential job, please make notice to myself and Their Excellencies prior to the resumption of in-person physical practices.

We are also seeking those with a desire to facilitate practices, tournaments, and wars in the future when we all return to in-person activities! And those who had already started the MIT process and have been but awaiting the day we can move forward again, please also notify us so we can help move you forward with the most haste when activities resume to serve as deputies and keepers of the Armory.

Letters of Intent to Serve will be welcomed for review and consideration through December.

Stile Marshal

We also will need candidates possessing a stile marshal warrant to serve as Deputy for Rapier to the knight’s marshal, and keeper of the Stile Armory. Letters of Intent to Serve should be submitted for consideration to the Baronage, the seneschal and the knight’s marshal as soon as possible, to arrive before next Curia.

In Service to Crown and Populous!

Weekly Announcements for BFS - August 10th, 2020

posted Aug 11, 2020, 2:40 PM by Forgotten Sea

From the Baroness

Greetings Barony,

If you haven’t seen the video that was released by the SCA Board of Directors this past weekend we would encourage you to take a few moments and follow this link https://youtu.be/bdmPfECeur8 to hear for yourselves the information that was shared in that video.

We know that this pandemic has caused a lot of change to our game in real time, but this last weekend's announcement reinforces the impact that this time of social distancing may affect not only our Barony and Kingdom but the Society as a whole. We are sure that you have some concerns about what the SCA will look like after the first of the year when things hopefully open back up and we are able to gather together again. I know that His Excellency and I have discussed the impact of our ever changing situation and have concerns as well.

With this in mind we are asking you to keep up your memberships if at all possible, and we want to put out a reminder that as the year starts to draw to a close and individuals/businesses are looking for tax-deductible donations, to keep the SCA in mind. We fully intend to keep The Dream alive and our SCA Family close to our hearts. Please consider yourselves all virtually hugged until the time we can gather again and share hugs, stories, bad jokes and puns, and I can feed you all way too many snacks!

In Service,

~Baroness Alianora

Curia this Wednesday at 6:30 pm

Please join us for Curia on Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm. Everyone is welcome and we would love to not only see you but to hear any ideas that you might have for helping to keep us closer during our social distancing period.

Master Mathurin has been scheduling time on Sunday evenings at Shawnee Mission Park for archery practice (see below for more info), and we would love to help others who would like to sponsor small outside gatherings to get your information out there for all to see.

Calontir’s Top 13 Songs

Miss singing with your friends. Wish you knew the words to more of Calontir’s songs?

On August 26 Mistress Dorcas will lead the singing of Calontir’s favorite songs during our Wednesday get-together. If you aren’t familiar with these songs, you can find the words for them in Katriana’s Songbook (http://www.calonsong.org/songbook.html). Mistress Katriana op den Dijk has collected the words to more than 150 Calontir songs and has them listed in alphabetical order.

The songs we’ll sing in two weeks are:

Steel Shod Dance

Raven Banner

Hotspur

Knight's Leap

Strike the Drum

Swan Road

At the Battle of Maldon

Benevento

Non Nobis

Compact Between Horse and Man

Cheer

Fruit of the Yew

Song of the Shield Wall

There's no way we will get through all of these, but we will make a start!

If you have never heard these songs, you can listen to most of them at the CalonSound Project: http://gladiusinfractus.com/wp/.

In-Person Meeting Ideas

Please forward your ideas and plans to the Baronage and Seneschal so that we can assist. We don’t intend to or desire to monitor what individuals or small groups choose to do in private backyards, but if you hold an SCA gathering we expect you to obey The Crown and local authorities.

Any public gathering announced on a recognized SCA social media site must follow all Kingdom and local government guidance! Their Majesties expect you to wear masks, socially distance, limit group size and observe any other guidelines affecting your location.

From the Archer Marshal:

Greetings BFS archers!

In order to maintain social distancing guidelines, we will be starting a second archery practice in Johnson County.
Starting on Sunday, July 19th, we will be at Shawnee Mission Park archery field. I am tentatively setting these for 6 pm to 8 pm, but I am very open to changing that time if another works better.
For those who have been to the SMP archery range in the past, it has been significantly upgraded, including shade pavilions over the shooting line. For those who haven't been there before, it has 1 or 2 butts each at various ranges.

You will need to bring your own water, maintain social distancing, and wear a mask. You will also need to buy an archery permit.
Google map for the location:
Shawnee Mission
To purchase a JCPRD permit over the phone with a credit card, call (913) 438-7275. A receipt will be emailed to serve as a temporary permit and you will receive your physical permit by mail.
You can also purchase them in person at the locations listed here: https://www.jcprd.com/642/Annual-General-Permits
Contact me if you plan to attend so we can keep track of numbers.

From the Baron

Unto the populace of Forgotten Sea, Greetings!

During our respite from large public events, we look forward to seeing you healthy and happy to participate as events resume. With that in mind, any fitness/health preparations are important for maximum enjoyment. This includes physical strength, cardio fitness, and heat tolerance. Improvement in these areas can help us all embrace events as they resume. Of course, please do so responsibly and to your effort level.

Furthermore, when we meet, it is vital for all of us to be considerate and inclusive of each other. We believe the hospitality Calontir is known for will be our greatest asset as a Society.

We also invite you to our Curia business meeting this Wednesday, if you are interested in witnessing and participating in the direction of Our Barony. Please read on for the details of when/how to link to the online meeting.

Baron Gerald Kendall

Curia Meeting, 6:30 pm

From the Seneschal

Unto the Populace of Forgotten Sea:

“Hate speech” is not tolerated in the Society.

“Hate speech” is speech or symbols that offend, threaten, or insult individuals or groups, based on race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, disability or other traits.

Such symbols and speech have no essential part of any discussion of ideas and are of so little value to the Society that any benefit that may be derived from them is clearly outweighed by the harm caused.

The use by any participant in the Society may result in possible sanctions up to and including revocation of membership and denial of participation.

Please report any possible instances of hate speech to your Kingdom Seneschal, the Society Seneschal or the President of the SCA immediately.

For more information about hate speech and the reporting of the same, please refer to the Society Seneschal’s Handbook.

Simple Interpretation:

Any and all offensive, insulting or threatening speech (including the written word in social media posts) or symbols (including memes, cartoons and caricatures) regarding any individual(s) or group(s) that are based upon race, skin color, religion or belief system, national origin, sexual orientation or identification, disability, or other traits is prohibited to or between participants or members of the Society for Creative Anachronism.

This does not apply only to individuals that do not agree with current popular or politically correct beliefs, concepts or opinions. Everyone is and will be protected equally! No one set of beliefs, concepts or opinions has more value than any others!

We all are, will and should be held to the same standard of conduct regardless of status, station, rank or position!

Simple Interpretation:

If you do not or cannot agree, and you are unable or unwilling to say anything nice to the other person, just don’t say or post anything!

The reality is that hate speech serves no positive purpose. It will never cause another person to align their beliefs or opinions with yours, and it can only serve to tarnish, erode and destroy your reputation.

Laird Brian Robert MacDougall, Seneschal

Greetings Unto the Barony,

First, his Excellency and I would like to wish everyone a safe and pleasant July 4th this coming weekend. Please remember that if you need to chat or need anything to help you feel more comfortable during this time of social distancing, please reach out to us or someone that you are close to. We realize Holidays are harder than we want to admit sometimes.

It is official that we are moving our Zoom meeting nights to Wednesdays at 7 pm this week. This decision was made by populace vote and we have listened to your preference. This week Master Melitus will visit with us about enameling. Please contact Ylva if you are interested in teaching a class. I know there is at least one opening still available for July, and we would love to have you teach a class with us.

Any public gathering announced on a recognized SCA social media site must follow All Kingdom and local government guidance! Their Majesties expect you to wear masks, socially distance, limit group size and observe any other guidelines affecting your location.

Please forward your ideas and plans to the Baronage and Seneschal so that we can assist. We don’t intend to or desire to monitor what individuals or small groups choose to do in private backyards, but if you hold an SCA gathering we expect you to obey The Crown and local authorities.

Virtual Kingdom Arts & Sciences July 18

Calontir will hold a virtual Kingdom A&S this year. As Ms. Kristine nic Tallieur says:

“Though we cannot meet in person, due to Their Majesties wise decree, we are still able to move forward with the Kingdom Arts & Sciences event in a fashion. Following a similar model to those used in other kingdoms over the last few months, a Virtual Calontir Kingdom Arts and Sciences Event will be held online on the same date as the original (July 18th).”

Highlights:

·       Entrants may enter a project which is display only or they may request a feedback session.

·       We will need judges to work the feedback sessions. Please use the judge database to update your availability.

·       There will be no Championship competition this year

·       The event will be FREE. Attendees may come from all over the Known World (though entrants are Calontir-only.) Please feel free to share.

Entry forms and event information can be found on Axed Root’s page: http://www.axedroot.calontir.org/virtual-kas-2020/?fbclid=IwAR0BvOVeeiKNF7YylKNtNtRQzDOkapSKjwAmcid94tFnX1h6_27R4JGJX_U

Need more information? An Entrant Information Session will be held this Thursday, July 1 at 6:30 pm. Mistress Kristine nic Tallieur and Lord Giovanni Loredan have a short presentation regarding how the display of entries will appear and will host a Q&A session after. The Facebook event page is at https://www.facebook.com/events/749683025836793/?active_tab=about.

Virtual Classes Continue on Wednesdays

Here’s a look at July’s Zoom classes:

·       July 1, 7 pm: Enameling with Master Mellitus. This class will cover the steps for creating a cloisonne enamel medallion: materials, preparation, and execution.

·       July 8: No class (Curia).

·       July 15: Medieval calendars with THL Lorraine. Calendars found in books of hours are beautiful, but what do they mean? Learn how to decipher them and how they were used.

·       July 22: Medieval Humours with THL Ysabel.

All classes start at 7 pm. If the class has a handout, a link to it will be posted several days before the class.

Virtual Fighter Practice Using Zoom This Wednesday at 7 pm

Thanks to His Grace Hirsch for teaching last week’s virtual practice. For those of you who could not make the class, or if you are like me, wanting to review all of his secrets, we have not one link to a video, but two links. We also have a link to the handout for the class.

This week both Master Ravasz and Count Logan will be showing us stretches and exercises for fighting fitness. This is aimed at both steel and rattan fighters. They highly recommend wearing clothing that allows you to participate if you choose. Please join us this Wednesday as usual. We will once more try to record the practice.

Thank you,

Dirik
