Weekly Announcements for BFS - June 29th, 2020

posted Jun 30, 2020, 5:03 PM by Forgotten Sea

From the Baroness

Greetings Unto the Barony,

First, his Excellency and I would like to wish everyone a safe and pleasant July 4th this coming weekend. Please remember that if you need to chat or need anything to help you feel more comfortable during this time of social distancing, please reach out to us or someone that you are close to. We realize Holidays are harder than we want to admit sometimes.

It is official that we are moving our Zoom meeting nights to Wednesdays at 7 pm this week. This decision was made by populace vote and we have listened to your preference. This week Master Melitus will visit with us about enameling. Please contact Ylva if you are interested in teaching a class. I know there is at least one opening still available for July, and we would love to have you teach a class with us.

In Service to Crown, Kingdom and the Dream,

Baroness Alianora

From the Seneschal

SCA In-Person Get-Togethers

Any public gathering announced on a recognized SCA social media site must follow All Kingdom and local government guidance! Their Majesties expect you to wear masks, socially distance, limit group size and observe any other guidelines affecting your location.

Please forward your ideas and plans to the Baronage and Seneschal so that we can assist. We don’t intend to or desire to monitor what individuals or small groups choose to do in private backyards, but if you hold an SCA gathering we expect you to obey The Crown and local authorities.

Officers

We still need:

·       Deputy Knight Marshal

·       Exchequer

·       Web Minister

·       Deputy Seneschal

The Barony does not run itself. Please share your time and talent.

Grace Period Ends Wednesday

The Society grace period for membership renewal ends July 1. Anyone that holds an office or warrant and needs assistance in keeping membership current should send an email to seneschal@bfk-kc.org or artsandsciences@bfs-kc.org or message me or Countess Ylva on Facebook. Help is available.

Ld. Brian Robert MacDougall

From the Arts and Sciences Minister

Virtual Kingdom Arts & Sciences July 18

Calontir will hold a virtual Kingdom A&S this year. As Ms. Kristine nic Tallieur says:

“Though we cannot meet in person, due to Their Majesties wise decree, we are still able to move forward with the Kingdom Arts & Sciences event in a fashion. Following a similar model to those used in other kingdoms over the last few months, a Virtual Calontir Kingdom Arts and Sciences Event will be held online on the same date as the original (July 18th).”

Highlights:

·       Entrants may enter a project which is display only or they may request a feedback session.

·       We will need judges to work the feedback sessions. Please use the judge database to update your availability.

·       There will be no Championship competition this year

·       The event will be FREE. Attendees may come from all over the Known World (though entrants are Calontir-only.) Please feel free to share.

Entry forms and event information can be found on Axed Root’s page: http://www.axedroot.calontir.org/virtual-kas-2020/?fbclid=IwAR0BvOVeeiKNF7YylKNtNtRQzDOkapSKjwAmcid94tFnX1h6_27R4JGJX_U

Need more information? An Entrant Information Session will be held this Thursday, July 1 at 6:30 pm. Mistress Kristine nic Tallieur and Lord Giovanni Loredan have a short presentation regarding how the display of entries will appear and will host a Q&A session after. The Facebook event page is at https://www.facebook.com/events/749683025836793/?active_tab=about.

Virtual Classes Continue on Wednesdays

Here’s a look at July’s Zoom classes:

·       July 1, 7 pm: Enameling with Master Mellitus. This class will cover the steps for creating a cloisonne enamel medallion: materials, preparation, and execution.

·       July 8: No class (Curia).

·       July 15: Medieval calendars with THL Lorraine. Calendars found in books of hours are beautiful, but what do they mean? Learn how to decipher them and how they were used.

·       July 22: Medieval Humours with THL Ysabel.

All classes start at 7 pm. If the class has a handout, a link to it will be posted several days before the class.

Jarlkonna Ylva

Weekly Announcements for BFS - June 22nd, 2020

From the Seneschal

Kris Kinder and Spring Crown 2021

Bids for these have been accepted, and staff are needed. Contact HE Ylva and HE Brialen about volunteering for Kris Kinder, and Mr. Andromir and Ld. Brian about Spring Crown.

From the Baroness

Greetings to all,

Please be advised that beginning next week (July 1) our weekly A&S/Populace meetings will be moving to 7 pm on Wednesday evenings.

This Wednesday Master Mellitus will teach and demonstrate enameling.

We are looking for teachers and class suggestions. Please contact Ylva to schedule/suggest a class.

Thanks!

From Duchess Catalina:

This Saturday, June 27, at 4 pm (or shortly after the seneschal Calon Con meeting if it goes that long), join me in my Majlis!

A Majlis is my social sitting area where we talk about Arts, Sciences, the SCA, Calontir Culture, Service, and why we are here.

Each week during the Plague times I invite all of you to join me and my special guest as we discuss what brings them joy in the SCA world of Arts & Sciences & Service.

This week we have the talented potter and entrepreneur Mistress Marie Le Faivre to chat with us about her love of being a potter.

From Countess Ylva

Greetings Forgotten Sea! Brialen and I will be co-stewards for Kris Kinder 2020, and would happily share the experience with someone who wants to learn more about the job. There is no commitment to be the KK Steward in the future required by this "deputy" position, so if you want to lend a hand and see the inner-workings please let us know.

The Honorable Lady Ayisha added: I would like to emphasize that there are some commonalities about running any event, so even if you don't think you'll want to run Kris Kinder in the future, if you are interested in potentially running *any* event in the future this is a good chance to learn more about what goes into it.

In-Person Meetings Now Possible – With Restrictions

Per Their Majesties, beginning July 1, local groups may begin hosting small outdoor gatherings for business meetings, A&S classes and archery if appropriate social distancing and safety measures can be maintained.

This does not include armored, steel or youth combat. You cannot maintain a six-foot distance between participants in these activities.

If you wish to hold a small gathering outdoors for an official SCA purpose, please notify the Baron and Baroness, the Webminister, the Social Media officer and me. Our contact info is available below.

Their Majesties have made clear that they expect “all local health guidelines [will be] followed to the best of your ability.”

This includes:

·       Social distancing

·       Wearing masks

·       Group size restrictions

·       Any other guidelines affecting your areas.

Please understand, wearing masks and maintaining social distance from others is not a suggestion. It is what the Crown expects of you. As They said in Their missive, “These guidelines may be difficult to enforce, and we ask each of you to take some responsibility for your fellow Calontiri.”

And Their Majesties expect the Seneschal and Baronage to ensure any activities remain safe for everyone wishing to attend. We have the authority to ask you to leave if you do not follow the rules.

They stress that hosting meetings is not required and should only happen of local conditions are feasible. Also, no one should be made to feel like they must attend these gatherings, and that some kind of online accommodation, such as videos posted to YouTube or Zoom meetings, be made available for those “who are unable or unwilling to attend.”

If these baby steps go badly, Calontir will have to step back and reevaluate any future group activities. It is in everyone’s interests that we do as Their Majesties have asked.

    Ld. Brian: seneschal@bfs-ck.org

    TE Kendall and Alianora: baronage@bfs-kc.org

    HE Ulfr: webminister@bfs-kc.org

    THL Lorraine: social.media@bfs-kc.org

From the Baroness

We would like to Thank Mistress Alessandra for sharing some of the secrets of beginning calligraphy with us last week.

Upcoming Zoom Meeting Info

We invite you to join us on Tuesday at 7 pm when Mistress Giraude will host a Thread Wrapped (not fabric wrapped) Buttons class. Information about the class and the supplies needed is listed below. If you would like to schedule teaching a class/discussion, or request a class you would like to watch, you can email our MOAS Ylva at artsandsciences@bfs-kc.org or send a Facebook message to Deanna Lewis.

New Night?

We are considering changing the nights of our A&S Gatherings due to some of our folks having previous engagements on Tuesday evenings. I would love to hear any feedback concerning what weeknight would be to your liking, please.

Indoor Fighter Practice Information

During our Curia meeting last Wednesday we discussed a site for indoor Fighter Practice for the fall. I know that it seems like Summer just began and that we have all the time in the world until Fall, unless you are trying to schedule an indoor site. We are finding that like many other things in today’s modern world that the prices have gone up from last year. With that in mind and having our recent Coronation in the middle of a snowstorm, we will be passing the hat/box/whatever at upcoming fighter practices/gatherings when we can meet again. Please keep this note in mind and prepare to have a little something to add to the hat when it comes your way.

News of The Trident Inn

We are looking into planning another visit to the Trident Inn complete with good friends, games and of course lots of grub! We will keep you posted with info as it becomes available, we just wanted everyone to have a chance to plan some amazing games and think of all the awesome things they may want to donate for the auction at the end of the day.

Baroness Alianora

From the Seneschal

The bids for Kris Kinder and Spring Crown Tournament have been accepted, and we will move forward with plans for Bloody Trident Inn tentatively in March 2021.

BFS General Populace Meeting and Class this Tuesday at 7 pm

16th-Century Thread Wrapped Bead Buttons, taught by M. Giraude Benet.

Learn how to make 16th-century style buttons by wrapping and weaving thread over a wood bead core. This is the style of button seen on many garments in Janet Arnold's "Patterns of Fashion 3: The Cut and Construction of Clothes for Men and Women C. 1560-1620." This technique can also be adapted to make buttons for Persian and Ottoman clothing.

Materials needed for the class: Large wooden bead (14mm is a good size for the practice piece), size 5 crochet cotton or similar heavy thread, and a blunt-tipped size 22 tapestry needle (a sharp needle won't work very well).

Topic: How to make thread-wrapped buttons with Mistress Giraude.

Time: Jun 16, 2020, 7 pm Central Time (US and Canada)

Curia is at 6:30 pm Wednesday.

From the Baroness

A Gulf War request has been brought to our attention. There is a Kingdom wide request for donations of beverages for the Thursday evening Calontir Party. If you are unable to attend and would like to donate, or have any questions please let HE Kendall or I know via message/fighter practice.

We also have been asked to pick at least two candidates to be the moral compass for our Barony. You can find more information on that in my March 5 post (below).

Finally, a request has been made that anyone taking their banner/portable holes/etc. along to war to move it so that it can be used to help line the camp road and courtyard the evening of the party for atmosphere. What a great idea!

Thank you for your help.

HE Alianora

Reminder: The Baronial A&S Championship is in 52 days.

From the Seneschal

Seeking Kris Kinder Event Staff:

At Curia we will discuss sites for summer and winter fighter practice (plus Curia), and we will talk about a potential Bloody Trident Inn event. We also will talk about winter war maneuvers and summer war college.

We are so excited that the days are starting to grow longer, and Spring is officially less than a month away! That means Gulf War is just around the corner as well. We would like to remind everyone that it is time to start those packing lists and armor repairs so that there aren't quite as many last-minute things to do before it's time to load up and head South. If this is your first Gulf Wars and you have any questions, please let us know or ask away on the Facebook page.

Notes from Curia February 12, 2020:

· Their Excellencies

o   Thank you for attending.

· Webminister

o   The website is functioning.

o   The Coronation website and forwarders need to be deactivated.

· On the topic of Coronation, there is a large blueish/greenish platter that was passed around in Court and is still missing. If anyone knows of its whereabouts, please let the Coronation event steward know.

· Knights Marshal

o   We have fighters.

o   We need to start thinking about what we’ll do when we move outside and for a practice site next fall. The community center will be moving to its new location across the highway this summer, and we’re not sure if we’ll be able to keep using it.

o   He is looking for several deputies: a drop-dead deputy, and a deputy willing to handle the loaner armor.

· Exchequer

o   Account balance was stated. (Quickly. This was not an omission; I didn’t get it written down in time).

o   We have a few checks needing to be signed; the financial committee members should please stay after so they can be signed.

o   We don’t have the final numbers for Coronation yet, as there are still a few refunds waiting to clear.

· Herald

o   Four people had items registered since last Curia: 3 names, 2 devices.

o   There are 22 items in the pipeline, 16 from BFS, and 6 from Aston Tor.

· Chatelaine

o   Please do not bring any more Gold Key donations at present, we have a lot she is busy sorting through.

o   We had quite a few new people show up, and a few have returned over the past few months.

o   We do not currently have any demos scheduled. Schools seem to be concerned about safety, so she is looking into conventions.

· A&S Minister

o   Queen’s Prize was last weekend, and Finan won Judge’s Choice.

o   On Feb. 26, Lady Narcissa will run the first class of the year, about Summer Roman garb.

o   We are looking for a time to hold the Lucet class. Watch for an announcement when it is scheduled.

o   The Baronial A&S Championship will be held on April 29. The theme is to make something for your persona.

· We have a bid due in April for the 2021 Spring Crown. We are currently seeking event stewards for it. If you are interested, please contact the Seneschal.

· We are looking for event stewards for Kris Kinder, in December. If you are interested, please contact the Seneschal.

· Update on the new mats we ordered for fighter practice: the manufacture is backed up by over 1500 units. It seems the backup is in customs. We expect we will run into the same issue with other manufacturers, so for now we are sticking with the same one so we do not lose our place in line, but it means we will need to continue using the old mats for now.

Baronial A&S Championship

We have a date for the Baronial A&S Championship now! It will take place on Wednesday, April 29, at the regularly scheduled fighter practice. There will be a table set up for entries.

As a reminder, the theme is to make something for your persona. If you've been putting off that personal project because you had other things to get done, now's the time to take care of it! Documentation is a 3x5 notecard minimum, although more is always encouraged.

Summer Roman Clothing Class Next Wednesday:

In celebration of the current Roman reign of Their Royal Majesties Calontir, and to aid the populace in creating cool and comfortable clothing for spring and summer events, Lady Fabia Narcissa Patricia will lead a class/discussion titled "Summer Roman: A casual look at Roman garb based on primary sources and scholarly investigations." The class will be held at Fighter Practice, on February 26 at 7 pm on the stage in the gym.

Weekly Announcements for BFS - February 10th, 2019

posted Feb 11, 2020, 4:05 PM by Forgotten Sea

Curia is this Wednesday at 6:30 pm.

From Their Excellencies Alianora and Kendall:

We enjoyed seeing everyone's wonderful entries at Queen's Prize this past weekend. We would like to take a moment to remind everyone that our Baronial A&S Championship will be coming up soon and we are excited to see what our local artisans are planning to enter.

We would also like to remind everyone that Curia meetings are open to everyone and that we would like to invite anyone interested to join us this week for our February Curia Meeting.

From Lord Brian, the Seneschal:

Reminder: The basket of goodies will be back Wednesday. If you worked on Coronation, stop by after Curia.

From Countess Ylva, the A&S Minister:

Queen's Prize was once again a wonderful experience for entrants, judges, and those who just came to look, learn and discuss the Arts and Sciences of the Middle Ages. Although competition is not the main point of Queen's Prize, it is called a "tournament" and there are a couple of prizes. One of those is Judges' Choice, which was won this year by Lord Finán mac Crimthainn of Forgotten Sea. To say that he made some glass beads does not begin to capture the depth and breadth of his research and experimentation in glass-making. Congratulations Lord Finan!
