Weekly Announcements for BFS - November 2nd, 2020

posted Nov 3, 2020, 5:27 PM by Forgotten Sea

From the Seneschal:

We finally have individuals expressing interest in stepping up to support the Barony as Knight’s Marshal.

Master Gawin Keppler, although not an authorized or warranted armored combat marshal, is an experienced armored combat fighter and a warranted stile marshal.

Lord Moon Hides the Sun, although not technically a resident of the Barony, is an experienced warranted armored combat marshal, and has previously served as Knight’s Marshal for another group.

If there are any others interested in serving the Barony, or who would be interested in being an MIT and working toward assuming this roll soon, please send a missive to both the current Knight’s Marshal (marshal@bfs-kc.org) and myself (seneschal@bfs-kc.org) to be considered at Curia next week.

The sooner we can have persons in place to take on the tasks of planning for the resumption of in-person practices, be involved in locating and obtaining a new indoor site, as well as the reporting requirements, the easier it will be for Master Brendon to retire and give his full attention to his future plans. They will also need to audit and inventory the loaner gear. They need to be a central resource for new fighters to contact, and to ensure loaner equipment is available. They also need to be the teacher / mentor / cheerleader to get a group of new MITs through the process and be ready to assume this important position in the future. Lastly, they need to have some organized plan and volunteers to transport floor mats should we resume practices at an indoor site.

Please consider all the worthy individuals who through their efforts have made surviving this time of plague, pestilence, and upheaval less traumatic. Make award recommendations at both the Kingdom and Baronial level so that we can have many opportunities to gather and celebrate them when we are able!

Finally; we encourage the populous to engage your inner craftsman, artist, and/or seamstress to begin creating gifts and treasures that we can bestow onto Their Majesties as Largess at the first opportunity for them to conduct Court!

BFS Weekly Announcements

Unto Our Baronial Family,

The days light grows shorter and the blustery wind carries with it the promise of winter. Our days of savoring fresh Summer flavors and the days of lingering in the rich warm rays of sunlight are numbered. Soon we will start to see our breath in the early mornings and we will begin taking our wools and leg wrappings from their storage. It is time to hasten to complete our final harvests and prepare for the dancing of snowflakes as they travel from the great grey sky toward the frozen ground all around us. His Excellency and I realize that this year may seem a bit more sparse/grey for some within the lands that we maintain for their Majesties. We would like to remind you that while we may still be social distancing that you are always welcome to reach out if you feel you are in need of anything. Enjoy a cup of warm cider, mead, mulled wine, tea, whatever you have, and feel the warmth fill you. Let it remind you that one day we will be able to gather again and feel the joy that is spread when we all gather together.

Consider yourselves hugged!

Baroness Alianora

From the Seneschal

Moving the BFS web presence to the new program is moving ahead swiftly. Most humble thanks to our Web Minister team, HE Sir Duncan Bruce of Logan and HE Ulfr Thyrison!

Please consider all the worthy individuals who through their efforts have made surviving this time of plague, pestilence, and upheaval less traumatic. Make award recommendations at both the Kingdom and Baronial level so that we can have many opportunities to gather and celebrate them when we are able!

We are becoming desperate to find a new Knights Marshal and a deputy, to be up to speed with plans and activities to enhance the training of our war host once we are safe to venture out and gather.

We also strongly encourage the populous to engage your inner craftsman, artist, and/or seamstress to begin creating gifts and treasures that we can bestow onto Their Majesties as Largess at the first opportunity for them to conduct Court!

Lastly, I wish to remind all members new or not so new, that Curia will continue to be open to all that wish to attend, virtually, the second Wednesday of the month at 7 pm. Please join in, put it on your calendar, set every imaginable reminder, and be a part of the process.

Weekly Announcements for BFS - October 12th, 2020

posted Oct 13, 2020, 6:15 PM by Forgotten Sea

Unto Our Baronial Family,

I have been thinking. October 25th is St. Crispin's Day. Each year about this time I notice that a lot of folks post the St. Crispin’s Day Speech penned by the Great Bard Shakespeare on their Facebook walls and express their gratitude to their “brothers” in life and reenactment. The day of St. Crispin is only a couple of weeks away; I would like to propose that we should take this day of gratitude a step farther. I challenge each of you to contact someone that you consider a brother/sister/partner in crime/whatever that has inspired you/made a difference in your life and to let them know that they have helped to you improve something that you have worked on; that they have been the inspiration for a project; or that you feel they have helped to make you a better person, just by being a part of your life. You could even light a bonfire and make a toast to a special person that is no longer with us.

Tomorrow is never guaranteed; let’s take a few minutes to lift up those who have inspired and nurtured us along the way.

Weekly Announcements for BFS - September 28th, 2020

posted Sep 28, 2020, 6:14 PM by Forgotten Sea

From the Baroness

Greeting to all,

Fall is officially here. I have already started smelling folks taking advantage of their fire pits with the cooler weather. The smell of the wood smoke lingering in the air always fills my heart with warm memories of songs and stories shared among friends and family.

The season of thankfulness is upon us. While it is hard being apart please take a few moments to reflect on not only lovely memories, but also for all of the little, or not so little, things that folks have been doing to help keep us all together in heart/spirit. Take a walk and enjoy the rich colors that Mother Nature is sharing with us and realize how truly rich our lives are because of one another. If you need anything (a virtual chat, to hear another human's voice on the phone or someone to run an errand/trip to the store) please remember that we are all in this together and reach out to your SCA family, because taking care of each other is what family does.

Baroness Alianora

From the Seneschal

Curia will be held online this Wednesday on Google Meet (see above) but at a new, hopefully more friendly, time of 7 pm. I encourage all to sign on and participate.

Spring Crown Tourney

After much effort and many snags, our bid for Spring Crown Tournament was passed over for the bid from Three Rivers. We wish them the best of fortune that this event actually occurs and that new Heirs to the Thrones of Calontir can be selected! I know that this is an important task that Their Majesties feel a heavy burden to complete.

Special thanks and recognition to Andromir for all his time, effort, perseverance and patience putting up with me in planning and battling to create and submit the Spring Crown Bid!

Bloody Trident Inn

We will move forward with planning for the rebirth of the Bloody Trident Inn event this spring! This is something that Their Excellencies and I along with the entire populace are most impatient to resurrect!

Officers Needed

Letters of Intent for the Deputy Knight’s Marshal for Rapier position will be accepted until Wednesday at the beginning of Curia. We are still in need of a new Knight’s Marshal, and a Drop-Dead Deputy Knight’s Marshal. The preference is to have them in place in October. Still also in need of a Deputy Seneschal.

New Practice Site

We still need to find a new practice site should we be able to return to in-person fighting activity before spring or summer is fully upon us. Ideas and suggestions are welcome and needed!

Laird Brian Robert MacDougall

New A&S Minister!

Our new Arts and Sciences Minister, the Honorable Lady Ysabel de la Oya, has asked BFS members to let her know what kinds of classes you would like to see. Contact her at artsandsciences@bfs-kc.org.

Archery Permits No Longer Available at Walmart, Other Retailers

You can still get your archery permits at the Shawnee Mission Park office (the building you see as you enter the park from the Renner Road entrance). Contact Mathurin for more information at archer-marshal@bfs-kc.org.

Archery practice will be from 1 pm to 3 pm Sunday at the Shawnee Mission Park archery range. The archery line is shaded. Remember to bring your own water and wear a face mask.

If you are interested or would like more information about any of these positions please contact Brian at seneschal@bfs-kc.org or the Baron and Baroness at baronage@bfs-kc.org.

Old Mats Still Available

We still have a significant number of the old mats available, mostly pink, some light blue. They are sitting in my (Brian’s) garage taking up space. If anyone wants to make arrangements to come and get some for one dollar each, contact me at seneschal@bfs-kc.org or Brian Deaver on Facebook.
